As the world changes before our eyes while the Covid-19 crisis unfolds, investors are looking into those long-term trends that will help them face these very uncertain times. Reports revealed that during the first months of the lockdown in 2020, more investors have flocked into ETFs, and not the usual large index trackers, but those targeting specific sectors.

From healthcare to technology and smart cities, Citywire and Lyxor ETF have hosted a Virtual Roundtable on thematic ETFs and dived into the megatrends that will reshape our economies and societies in the years to come. But how to distinguish a real theme from a fad? What are the liquidity implications involved and how to allocate to themes?

CHANCHAL SAMADDER, CFA

HEAD OF PRODUCT STRATEGY, LYXOR ETF

Chanchal Samadder is head of product strategy at Lyxor ETF. Having joined Lyxor in 2013 as Head of UK ETF Sales and moving in 2017 to head the Equity ETF Strategy. He is now responsible for overseeing the product and distribution strategy of Lyxor’s range of over 230 ETFs . Chanchal started his career in 2003 with UBS Wealth Management in London on the Advisory Trading desk specializing in listed equity derivatives after which he spent five years at Blackrock leading the sales overage for UK Institutional clients at the iShares ETF business. Chanchal holds a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science and is a CFA Charterholder.

JEAN-MAURICE LADURE, CFA

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND HEAD OF EQUITY APPLIED RESEARCH, EMEA, MSCI

Jean-Maurice Ladure is Executive Director and Head of Equity Applied Research, EMEA with responsibility for research to support new and existing indexes and risk models, including factor, ESG and economic exposure indexes, as well as performance and risk attribution. He also serves as an ambassador to asset owners and managers on the role of indexes and factor models in asset allocation and portfolio construction. Prior to joining MSCI, he held a number of roles at Coutts, the private bank of RBS. As Global Head of Quantitative Solutions, he was instrumental in developing Coutts’ client proposition and was responsible for investment performance analysis and portfolio risk. Before that, he was Head of Investment Strategy in Europe, primarily responsible for making investment recommendations within managed portfolios. This was based on modelling the interactions between economics and financial assets, assessing equity market valuations and capturing investor sentiment effects on markets. Prior to Coutts, he was an investment strategist at Barclays Wealth and also worked at BNP Paribas Asset Management, as an institutional portfolio manager and quantitative analyst. Jean-Maurice holds a Master’s degree in Economics and Statistics from ENSAE in France and is a CFA charter holder and a French actuary.

LUKAS NECKERMANN

MANAGING DIRECTOR, NECKERMANN STRATEGIC ADVISORS

Lukas Neckermann is Managing Director at Neckermann Strategic Advisors, a consultancy based in London and New York with a focus on emerging new mobility trends and their strategic impact. He is also Chief Strategist at Splyt, a mobility and travel ecosystem startup. He began his automotive career in BMW’s Central Marketing department, where he co developed the first BMW.com website and helped launch the innovative Z8 sports car. Lukas joined Allianz in 2002, reporting to the Group’s CEO, Michael Diekmann. He rose through various strategic and line leadership functions, including Head of Business Development for Allianz Automotive, Head of Group Learning – responsible for the company’s corporate university, and Commercial Director of Euler Hermes UK plc. Lukas is the author of three books, The Mobility Revolution, Corporate Mobility Breakthrough 2020, and most recently, Smart Cities, Smart Mobility. He is advisor to four further start-up companies: NEXT Future Transportation Inc. based in Silicon Valley, as well as Hyperion Executive Search, Flock, and Eliport, each based in Europe. He is an Adjunct Instructor at New York University, where he teaches “Strategy for the Entrepreneur”. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Science and Technology Studies from Cornell University, and an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business.

MASSIMO RICATTI

PORTFOLIO MANAGER – MULTIMANAGER DIVISION, BCC RISPARMIO & PREVIDENZA

Massimo Ricatti is a portfolio manager and fund selector at BCC Risparmio&Previdenza, the Asset Management company of Gruppo Bancario Cooperativo ICCREA, since 2017. As a member of the multi-manager division, he conducts due diligence and fund selection on all asset classes, with focus on thematic investments and alternative strategies, doing both quantitative and qualitative analysis. He holds a master’s degree in Finance from Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca.

ANDREW SUMMERS

HEAD OF COLLECTIVES AND FUND RESEARCH, INVESTEC WEALTH & INVESTMENT

Andrew Summers became head of collectives and fund research at Investec Wealth & Investment in 2011. He originally joined Investec Private Bank in 2007 and was named global head of fund research in 2009. He started his financial career at Goldman Sachs in 1996, covering various roles.
